Here’s a rush transcript of Beto O’Rourke on the STEM School shooting in Highlands Ranch, Colorado, about an hour ago.
Eight children have been injured, some criticially so. In this country this year, as we have in the past years, we’ll lose more than 30,000 of our fellow Americans to gun violence. And no other country comes even close to this level of carnage.
And so either we can accept that this is our fate. This is our lot in life. That we’re inherently violent or evil or bad or wrong or immoral, none of which I can accept, or that there is a human solution to this human-caused problem.
Those students who walked out of their schools to protest this gun violence, who led the Marches for Our Lives, Those moms who demand action, are forcing the conversation that this country needs to have, are ensuring that the silence, the complicity purchased by the NRA, the gun lobby, the political action committees, is defeated and that we finally get action on universal background checks, which in those states that have adopted them, have been shown to reduce gun violence by 50%, ensuring that we no longer sell weapons designed and engineered and sold to the United States military for the express purpose of killing people effectively, efficiently and in as great a number as possible, because that’s exactly what they do.
No longer selling them into our communities, leaving them on the battlefields, adopting red flag laws, not just in those communities that elect to do that, but in every community in the United States of America. If you are showing signs that you are going to be a danger to yourself or someone else in your life or in my life, I want to make sure there’s a deliberate process to take that firearm away from you before you use it against someone or use it against yourself.
